Moving Image Evaluation

Dan Pearce and I decided to choose the moving image part of the coursework, ahead of the magazine part and this was because we both preferred the practical side of the coursework.
We decided to base our film on two types of genres, which were Dark Comedy and Action. Dark Comedy is a type of genre that shows serious issues in humourous/comedic views, comedians see this as a chance to explore important issues. We chose Dark Comedy as we felt that it is rare to be used in films nowadays but some films that have used this genre in the past have proved to be successful and very popular. We were inspired by the film Fargo as this Dark Comedy film had proved a massive success using the genre with it winning 2 Oscars, another 52 wins and 30 nominations. We decided to also use the genre of Action because we felt that this genre is one of the more popular genres amongst the public whilst it also would fit into our film well, along with Dark Comedy. The film follows the codes and conventions of simular products, in the technical aspect we used a range of different shots, including Master shots, Close ups, long shots, a low angle shot and two shots. In the Symbolic side we chose to have everyone wearing casual clothing, this was because we felt that it no costumes were needed as the film is set on an average day and there was no special occasion involved in the film. In the sound side we decided mostly Diegetic and Dialogue and this was because the film contained generally sounds within the film and people speaking. We chose to include a track called "Super Sharp Shooter" by The Ganja Crew as the opening credits, we chose the track called "Helter Skelter" by The Beatles when two of the characters find the body they had locked in the boot of their car missing and a track called "Break On Through" by The Doors for the end credits. We also used a voiceover at the start of the film about the boy explaining an experience a few minuted previous and this then leads to a flashback.
Our film fits into the market as a budget film, this is because we wouldn't have much money to spend on the film and also the actors/ actresses would be relatively unknown. Young adults/teenagers are represented in the film and this is due to the film showing how determined a young man/teenager is desperate for money and will do anything for it, this is because the film is about how a boy will take drastic measures to get money so he has enough funds to be able to go to college. Teenagers are represented in our film as naive, due to them not knowing exactly what they really want and are just keen on money, due to them doing anything for it. Teenagers are represented in this fashion in the opening scene of our film because it is reality and shows teenagers/young people of the circumstances that money can have on people of their age.
The Political/Social/Cultural Ideology of the film is to stop teenagers being so naive and make them realise that money is not the most important thing in life.
The film would be made as a budget film as the money limit would be low and obviously the film would not be well known among the public. Young and unknown directors will produce the film due to us having a limited budget. Our film product would be suitable for young and unknown directors because we have not made any previous films, this means that big and well known film directors would not want to direct a film made by Dan and I, with no previous film producing experience.
The audience for the film is more likely to be men rather than women due to it being an action containing violence and this is more appealing to men. The age group it would appeal to most would be around the ages of 15-30, as the certificate of the film is a 15 and the age range of men aged between 20-30 tend to be into action films.
Our film fits into Todorovs Narrative Theory as our film follows the five stages of his theory. This is because our film starts off with everything is as it should be, this then changes when a flashback of the boys previous experience, although our film follows it to start off with, the end part of our film doesnt return to the norm like Todorovs Theory does, this is because our film is the opening scene and if it was the whole film then it would end returning to the norm.
The choices of language that we used in the film was mainly informal because our film contained criminals, which are not going to be the most intelligent people around and a lot of the language included swearing and abusive language towards characters in the film especially from the Loan Shark.
I have learnt more about editing during the process of constructing my product, I have found that having more footage gives you the chance to pick and choose the best parts which means that you have better chance of producing a better film.
After doing both my preliminary task and my final opening scene to a film I feel that our final piece is longer and better because we had more footage to edit than we did for the preiliminary task, we included soundtracks and we also had a voiceover, which is spoken by the main character. We used a lot more ranges of camera shots, and this is better because it gives the audience an insight from all sorts of angles it also fits in with with its Action genre.

Coursework Ideas

For my coursework I want to do a moving image footage video because I enjoy doing something more productive with acting involved. I will probably be working with Dan Pearce as we enjoyed and did well during the preliminary task. I really enjoyed the preliminary task.

My Evaluation

I decided to do my preliminary task on a magazine based on Chew Valley School called "The Valley". My Magazine uses forms and conventions of real media products as it uses a stylish font for the title of my magazine which is quite fun and it is very eye catching, I also used 3 different font colours to make the magazine attractive so that people will notice it easily, I made my magazines main picture of a student learning from a teacher fill up the whole of the front cover. I made the price of "Free" stand out with it being written in red font with a green background to again make it attractive and eye catching and finally I made the front cover have a storyline accross the picture to make the reader look up and take notice of it and hopefully read it.
My media product represents Chew Valley School to be a good place to be with success in every department in learning with a student learning from a teacher whilst also enjoying learning with a smile on his face.
The school itself or the local council (Bath And North East Somerset) would be most likely to distribute my media product because they are the ones most interested in students joining Chew Valley School, Chew Valley School itself would also like parents and students that actually attend the school to use the magazine as they want everyone to be up to date with all of the news around the school whilst also having parents recommending the school to parents and children who are interseting in joining the school.
The audience for my media production are parents and students of Chew Valley School and also potential students and parents of the future.
I attracted/addressed my audience by using a photo of a student of the school looking interested whilst learning from a teacher and I also used many different colours within fonts and backgrounds. I used a big cover story on the front over the picture which is related to it as it says "Academic Improvement Again For Chew!".
I have learnt how to cut out backgrounds from pictures and also how to find and use different fonts within my fornt cover. I have learnt that using many colours within fonts and backgrounds are one of the main ways to attract your audience within magazines.
I have learnt a lot from the progression to the full product as I started from a basic white magazine to using different things like pictures backgrounds, stylish fonts, different coloured fonts and a tagline that helps for viewers to remember my magazine.
